2013 - 2014

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2015
Dear BSRN station scientists and BSRN data users,
best Christmas greetings from the World Radiation Monitoring Center, the central archive of the Baseline Surface Radiation Network BSRN. The year 2014 is nearly finished, a perfect time for a brief summary of what has happened and what we plan for 2015.
First of all the BSRN workshop held in Bologna at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (ISAC) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) was a great success. Many thanks go to Joe Michalsky, Christian Lanconelli and Vito Vitale who organized the meeting! A group photo is available here
Joe - the current interim project manager from the BSRN - is going to retire soon. He took over this position from Ells Dutton in October 2012. We all thank Joe for all the work he did for the BSRN and wish him the best for his future. A new BSRN project manager will be announced soon.
Currently, close to 8000 monthly datasets from 58 BSRN stations all over the world are available in the archive. Some BSRN stations had to close in the past but more candidates plan to deliver their data in the near future, see: http://bsrn.awi.de/stations/maps.html. Following e.g. the Web of Science, the topic “BSRN” was cited more than 1000 times in the literature. Many thanks to all BSRN station scientists and their staff who worked hard to create this remarkable success.
Friedrich Richter worked for many years as a data curator for the archive. He was responsible for checking the quality of the routinely incoming data and for importing checked data into the archive. Since he finished his studies he passed over this work to Bonnie Raffel, also studying meteorology at the University of Hamburg. Many thanks – Friedrich – for your valuable contribution to the BSRN and all the best for your future!
The other colleagues from the World Radiation Monitoring Center plan to continue their work in 2015 as before. We will do our best for an ongoing fruitful cooperation. We will take care to serve all BSRN station scientists and BSRN data users to contribute to the success story called BSRN. Happy 2015!  Quality checks "comparisons" online
Since 2014-07-25 all diagrams showing SumSW versus SWD for any station and year are available at: bsrn.awi.de/products/quality-code/comparisons.html. Snapsot of the WRMC 2014-06 ready On 2014-06-19 the latest snapshot of the whole contents of the WRMC was created, see: http://hs.pangaea.de/Projects/BSRN/. This snapshot can be burned on 2 DVDs which can be used to retrieve BSRN data off line. The snapshot offers all datasets submitted to the archive up to beginning of 2014-06-19 and the PANGAEA search engine. Data submitted or modified later can be accessed only on line! Using data from a snapshot is not just comfortable. It additionally offers the chance to cite many datasets of a distinct version with one single doi (http://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.833428). New design of the BSRN-webpages Since 2008 the BSRN-webpages www.bsrn.awi.de are hosted at AWI, Bremerhaven. They base on the content management system TYPO3. The installation of a new TYPO3-version made a redesign of the BSRN-webpages necessary. Since 2014-05-05 the new system is on-line.
The contents and the structure of the pages are more or less unchanged. We hope that you like the new design and that this change will not confuse you.  Next BSRN Meeting The 2014 BSRN Meeting was held in Bologna, Italy, 9 - 12 September, see: Meetings. Mailing lists 2013-12
To improve the communication between the BSRN/WRMC administration and all BSRN station scientists as well as to the BSRN users mailing lists have been created. Update of the Technical Plan for BSRN Data Management 2013-11 At http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/gcos/Publications/gcos-174.pdf an update from the technical Plan for BSRN Data Managements  (Hegener et al. 1998) is now available. It includes the definition of the station-to-archive file format. Additional, all features offered from the World Radiation Monitoring Centre at the Alfred Wegener Institute are described. Snapsot of the WRMC 2013-07 ready
End of July 2013 a snapshot of the whole contents of the WRMC was created, see: ftp://ftp.bsrn.awi.de/2013-07_snapshot/. This snapshot can be burned on 2 DVDs which can be used to retrieve BSRN data off line. The snapshot offers all datasets submitted to the archive up to beginning of 2013-07 and the PANGAEA search engine. Data submitted or modified later can be accessed only on line.
